Our Landlord and Tenant department has built a formidable reputation in the field of rent reviews, arbitration, lease renewals, dilapidations, insurance disputes and providing expert witness evidence in related fields.
We pride ourselves on being able to add value to any instruction by calling on our wealth of knowledge and experience. We specialise in unusual and complex legal and valuation issues. We frequently work alongside senior property litigation solicitors and leading Counsel.
We have an extensive client base including instructions from institutions, property companies, private landlords and tenants. We also receive regular recommendations from firms of solicitors.
Three of the firm’s directors, Richard Hargreaves, Torquil Gyngell and Ian Feltham are on the RICS Panel of Arbitrators and Independent Experts and are regularly appointed to act in high profile cases.
Torquil Gyngell FRICS MCIArb
Torquil heads the Department. Over twenty years he has built a reputation in the landlord and tenant field dealing in particular, but not exclusively with London and Home County offices.
As well as acting for landlords and tenants he takes appointments as Independent Expert and Arbitrator and he is one of a number of Chartered Surveyors asked by the RICS to train new Arbitrators. Torquil is a president of Arbix and is a frequent lecturer on landlord and tenant matters as well as chairing the RICS Disciplinary and Appeal Boards.
Ian Feltham FRICS ACI Arb
Ian started his career in London in 1978 with Richard Ellis where he spent some 12 years. In 1990 he moved to Healey & Baker (Cushman and Wakefield) and at the beginning of 2002 CB Hillier Parker. Before joining Hargreaves Newberry Gyngell in 2007 he was senior director with CBRE.
He has specialised for over 25 years in the Landlord and Tenant sector mainly dealing with offices in the South East of England and Central London.
He regularly acts as Arbitrator and independent expert either appointed by the President of the RICS or by personal appointment.
Martin Syrett BSc (Hons) MRICS
Martin has specialised in landlord and tenant matters for more than twenty years and has wide experience of rent reviews, lease renewals, Arbitrations, valuations and appearing as an Expert Witness. He has recently been appointed to the RICS Panel of Independent Experts.
He specialises in particular in leisure properties and advises a number of hotel and casino operators.
Susan Elwood BA (Hons) MRICS
Throughout her career Susan specialised in the wide range of professional working at rent reviews, leases renewals and valuations for a variety of purposes. She has dealt with all types of property but predominantly offices in London and the South East of England.
James started his career in the commercial property market at Cushman and Wakefield in 1998. He moved to GVA Grimley and was promoted to Associate in 2005, and in 2007 joined Hargreaves Newberry Gyngell as an Associate Director.
He has been involved in a variety of work throughout his career primarily focused on the City and West End markets.
